Competition Math Teams and Problem Solving

Competition math connects a global community of learners where kids. In contrast to most other experiences in math, competition math focuses on multi-age learning that celebrates creativity and persistence. “Mathletes” relish the challenge of non-routine problems which demand planning, organization and accurate calculations. The overwhelming majority of kids in Vermont are denied access to participation in competition math, however, because Vermont schools do not sponsor teams. In response, I started a program open to any kid who wishes to become a “mathlete”

During 2012-2013, I am running Math Olympiad. More than 150,000 kids from 30 countries participate in Math Olympiad. Math Olympiad offers five half hour tests for kids from grades 4-8. The problems have a larger range of difficulty so that every kid can work on a problem or two during the 1/2 hour Olympiad. This facilitates the formation of teams from two or more grade levels, which supports mentoring relationships between more and less experienced “mathletes”
